Intersectionality: The Layers That Shape Us

Did you know that two people from the same community can experience the world completely differently?

And that is because identity is never limited to just one thing. There are multiple factors that help define one’s identity - culture, gender, language, class, family, and the spaces we move through every day.

All these layers overlap, shaping how we see the world, and how the world sees us.

And that is what Intersectionality is all about. 

A South Asian girl and a South Asian boy may grow up in the same home, eat the same food, celebrate the same traditions… yet experience life differently. And that difference matters.

Intersectionality reminds us that no story is one-dimensional.

That people carry multiple layers at once, and each one adds depth to their experience.

It teaches us to listen a little closer, and assume a little less.

It also teaches us to understand that empathy begins when we recognize that everyone’s journey is layered in ways we may not immediately see.
