Two weeks ago, on a sunlit September afternoon in New York, something we had dreamed of for years finally came alive. At The Dom, surrounded by friends, family, and strangers who felt like kin, we unveiled House of Jaya through “The Silk Road: A Runway Experience.” The room pulsed with the rhythm of music and movement, but underneath it all was a quieter truth: this was about more than clothes on a runway. It was about belonging.
House of Jaya began as a conversation between our two founders, Julie Thomas Achettu and Shveta Sahu, about creating a unique fusion that resonates with those who navigate multiple cultures in their everyday lives. The answer came through design.
We envisioned a line that would honor the artistry of South Asia while embracing the ease and simplicity of American style. Pieces that won’t force you to choose between heritage and modernity but instead let you carry both in a single silhouette. Seasonless, small-batch garments, made with intention and never mass-produced.
On the runway in New York, we watched that vision walk into the light. Intricate Banarasi brocades were reimagined in contemporary jackets, corsets, shorts, and jumpsuits. Fluid fabrics printed with heritage South Asian motifs were stitched into structured shapes for the streets of the United States. Outfits that felt like both sides of a story, finally, in conversation with each other. The applause was affirming, but even more moving were the quiet nods, the knowing smiles, and the whispered, “This feels like me.”
What mattered most were the people who sought us out after the fashion show, letting us know they were impressed with our mission. It was inspiring to see that the stories we want to tell are being heard. It gave us hope for the future! Our brand is for the woman who values style and substance, and wants her choices to make a difference.
House of Jaya is not just about aesthetics. Each piece carries purpose. With every purchase, we support young women in rural India to gain access to education, health, and safety. We are also deeply committed to sustainability, repurposing fabric scraps into accents and upcycled garments, and giving beloved sarees new life in modern forms. In a world of excess, we want to create with care.
The name Jaya means victory in Sanskrit. For us, it is the triumph of finding the seamless blend of two cultures, of celebrating artisans whose hands bring beauty to the world, and of supporting girls who are writing their own futures.
That September day in New York was the first chapter of our story. It was filled with fabric, music, and light, but also with something far more lasting: a sense of community. And this is only the beginning.
