Bhavik Modi, co-founder of Azadi Brewing, was born in the heart of Mumbai and raised across the American heartland—from the tech-driven streets of Cupertino, California, all the way to Cincinnati, Ohio. His journey as a South Asian American has been one of conscious integration: blending deep reverence for his Indian roots with his distinct entrepreneurial spirit.
Rooted in Heritage, Brewed with Intention
For Bhavik, identity isn’t about choosing between two worlds—it’s about honoring both. “I am incredibly proud of my Indian heritage,” he says. “I’ve made an effort to learn about all of the individual cultures on the Indian subcontinent and how each region has evolved.” That pride isn’t just personal—it’s professional. At Azadi Brewing, Bhavik and his team bring India’s flavors, stories, and traditions into the world of American craft beer, challenging expectations and expanding palates.
“Our entire brand is connected to being unapologetically Indian,” Bhavik explains. “From the names of our beers to the ingredients to the label art—it all connects.” Each brew at Azadi tells a story: Doosra Basmati Rice Lager is named after a ball thrown in Cricket (the Doosra), and the label features a cricket pitch surrounded by Basmati Rice. At the same time, Gir Lassi infuses Kesar mango and vanilla into a milkshake IPA inspired by the flavors of Gujarat.
Navigating Dual Identity in Daily Life
Bhavik’s dual identity has always been a point of reflection—sometimes a source of pride, sometimes a challenge. Growing up in Ohio with a smaller Indian community, he played baseball and football, surrounded mostly by non-Indian peers. “There were pressures to hide the Indian side of me,” he recalls. “Using a nickname at Starbucks, not bringing Indian food to lunch... But I appreciate my parents for keeping me connected, and I found a lot of value in self-study.”
Language plays an anchoring role in Bhavik’s life. He speaks Gujarati, Hindi, English, and even some Spanish. “I really value my native language and don’t want to lose that,” he says. “I try to practice using it as much as possible.” That desire to stay connected goes beyond language, extending to frequent trips back to India, cooking regional dishes at home, and ensuring that his friends understand the cultural richness he comes from.
Redefining “Modern”
One of the more nuanced ideas Bhavik offers is the reframing of what we consider ‘modern.’ In his view, many elements of Indian culture that once felt outdated are now reemerging in global consciousness. “There’s a misconception that ‘new, modern’ has to be American,” he says. “But things like Ayurveda, yoga, turmeric, and ashwagandha are now being celebrated in the West. There’s a centuries-old science behind using these ingredients.”
Bhavik doesn’t view cultural identity as a binary or a burden—it’s a lens that enriches every part of his life, including how he defines success. Grounded in principles like ahimsa (non-violence) and dharma, he says, “Not getting too caught up in success is important. Finding ways to give back to others and do good—that’s key for me.”
Advice to the Next Generation
To young South Asians navigating their own dual identities, Bhavik offers this: “Embrace who you are. We come from one of the world’s oldest cultures... We have a lot to teach, and I hope we continue to embrace who we are.”
Through Azadi Brewing, Bhavik Modi is doing just that—creating a space where craft beer becomes a cultural dialogue, where tradition and innovation co-exist, and where every label carries a piece of home.
